Powell Seeds LLC has been employing students from Hardin, Hancock and Allen counties since 1937. In July students help remove "female" tassels from inbred lines of seed corn so that the pollen from "male" inbred lines can cross pollinate the "female" lines. Many generations of area families have helped with this aspect of the seed corn production and the Powell family is very grateful for their help. It can be hot, cold, wet or dry but when the tassels start to come out they have to be pulled! It can be a challenging but rewarding "first" job for many area students.
